ABA Banking Journal Podcast

Jun 21, 2018

The latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast, sponsored by Velocity Solutions, takes listeners to the “busiest place in the entire country” when it comes to oil, as Jay Jenkins describes his hometown of Carlsbad, N.M. The boomtown — located in the heart of the oil-rich Delaware Basin, which is part of the broader Permian oil-producing area — has more than 50,000 residents right now, twice its Census population, Jenkins says.

On the podcast, Jenkins — who is president and CEO of Carlsbad National Bank — discusses the “good problems” that result from this growth and how his bank is prudently managing risks associated with the oil and gas industry and the companies that serve it. As a local civic and business leader, Jenkins spends much of his time advocating on overall business environment and quality-of-life issues in southeastern New Mexico, such as water quality and underground waste storage.

As a member of ABA’s Government Relations Council and Banker Advocacy and Grassroots Committee, Jenkins also spends time building relationships with lawmakers and their staff. “I’ve made it a real effort to become friends with staff members from our senators and our representatives,” he explains. “My livelihood depends on things happening, and if we don’t have a good economy… I might be out of a job.” Read more about Jenkins here.
